Overview Katy is home to the Igloo Corporation, an internationally-known manufacturer of cooling and portable refrigeration products. Katy ISD Encompasses 181 square
miles 20 miles west of downtown Houston in Harris, Fort Bend and
Waller Counties. 45 campuses including
27 elementary schools, 10 junior highs, 6 high schools, a
career-technology center and an alternative center. One of the
fastest-growing school districts in Texas with an annual growth rate of about 5 to 6
percent projected through 2016. The districts most recent
successful bond package in 2002 authorized $315.635 million in funds,
which will provide most facility needs through 2007. Instructional quality
guided by a comprehensive district wide curriculum management plan, which
coordinates development, delivery and assessment of teaching
throughout the district. A highly advanced
technology program includes one to three computers in each classroom, multiple
labs in each school, a technology facilitator assigned to each campus,
distance learning capabilities at several campuses, a fiber optic
network linking every school and facility and an automated curriculum
management plan. An award-winning
Partners in Education program provides approximately one volunteer for each
three children in the district. Volunteers donated more than a half
million hours in 2005-06. The first school
district in the world to adopt a Junior Achievement "whole district"
approach. During 2005-06, more than 30,000 students participated in JA classes
taught by volunteers from throughout the community.
Recognitions Student achievement on
statewide tests consistently surpass statewide achievement levels at every
grade level in every area tested. On the 2006 test, performance for
all students was above 90% in writing (96%), social studies (95%)
and reading/language arts (94%). One of the largest
"Recognized" districts in Texas. 10 campuses are ranked
"Exemplary," 25 are "Recognized" and seven are

Growing at 5 to 6.25% yearly, Katy ISDs enrollment
is expected to reach 83,418 by the
2015-16 school year. Thats more than a 100%
increase from 2003-04. Since
1999, the district has completed 17 new
schools: Cinco Ranch, Morton Ranch and Seven
Lakes High Schools; Beckendorff,
Cinco Ranch, McMeans and Morton
Ranch Junior Highs; Creech, Exley, Franz,
Griffin, Kilpatrick, King, Rhoads, Rylander,
Schmalz and Williams Elementaries;
plus performing arts centers at the
four high schools, an agriculture science
facility, a police and maintenance complex.

Public libraries Community information Retail centers are springing up all throughout Katy to accommodate the rapid residential growth. The major retail growth is now being focused on the Katy Fort Bend Road near the east entrance to the Katy Mills shopping mall. Postal service History The City of Katy was formally incorporated in 1945. Katy has always been a traditional family style community; however, it also played a major role as a rail hub, a rice farming and agricultural center, and one of the largest gas fields in this part of Texas. ![]() MKT Depot and Caboose, 5615 First Street in Railroad Park. The Katy Heritage Society was established in 1979 by a group formed to save the old MKT Railroad Depot. With the help of the City, the Depot was acquired and restored by the Heritage Society. Other historical structures have been acquired and restored by the Society. All of their structures are now located at Katy Heritage Park, 5990 George Bush Drive.
